I am an Architect. I believe in art. Your brief is our palette; Your land is our canvas;
Functionality, joy of space, cost effectiveness and art are the objectives. Im interested in buildings and how people feel & live inside the spaces.
How are humans to dwell on this planet? What do we really need in life versus what do we want? How do we place our buildings amongst the landscape? Is it possible to make a timeless architecture? Can building functions change over time within the same spaces? Who makes the rules? Why and why not are the key questions.
I want change; Each new building must be a revolution in function, space, materials, structure, technology and the building must change the occupant’s life; uplift their spirit and bring serenity, light, joy and simplicity into their life.
Im interested in emptiness; In silence; In the tension created though empty versus full; In the contrasts between heavy versus solid; In dark versus light; In high versus low. I believe in buildings which are mysterious sculptures with clarity -placed amongst nature, visually contrasting nature, harmonious with nature but appreciating nature; Time-stamped memorials to the progress & efforts of man.
A project with me starts with discussion, with debate, with questions. The answers to these questions are not easily, quickly or readily found. But the actual project explores these questions so that we can learn and understand ourselves as humans and understand our place in this landscape.
I believe in non-contrived simplicity & minimalism. I believe the best sustainability is to reduce. The best architecture is less architecture.
As Hans Hofmann the early 20th Century abstract modern artist stated ; "the ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak".
